Designer Whey was already being made in the United States back in 1993, long before protein powder became the crowded and creative category it is today. Designer Wellness also credits the product as the first commercially instantized whey developed for everyday consumers. More than three decades later, the company has returned to that cornerstone supplement and given it a distinctly modern overhaul spanning the formula, flavoring, and packaging.
Despite retaining the Designer Whey name, the 2026 recipe is no longer exclusively whey, as newly added microfiltered micellar casein now sits between whey concentrate and whey isolate in the triple-source protein blend. The nutrition profile on the revamp is led by a solid 20g of protein, around 6g of carbohydrates with low sugar, no added sugar, 1 to 2g of fat, and 110 calories, plus prebiotic fiber, probiotics, and enzymes to support digestion.
Designer Wellness also rebuilt the flavoring system through years of testing for a smoother and richer taste, while reducing added sugar, which, again, is now at zero. The new Designer Whey relies entirely on natural flavors with stevia, no artificial sweeteners or colors in six options with Gourmet Chocolate, French Vanilla, Strawberry Cream, Unflavored, and Double Chocolate. A couple of those are already in stock direct at $59.99 for 2lbs and $89.99 for a 5lb.
