Japan’s Pocotein packs 10g of protein into a cup of ice cream with as low as 100 calories

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a dozen times; functional food companies are always a lot more interesting when it comes to innovation, and it purely comes down to the avenues and directions creative brands can take. In the world of functional products, brands have the opportunity to roll together sets of ingredients, amounts, and functions, into standard, hot, and cold foods, the last one being what Japanese brand Pocotein is about.

Pocotein is a protein ice cream specialist, which makes a better-for-you version of the traditional frozen treat using milk and milk powder, high-quality grass-fed whey isolate, and the low-calorie sugar alternative allulose. The brand makes small 120ml cups of ice cream, and in those cups, you get a moderate 10g of protein with 3g of fat, just 4g of sugar, low net carbohydrates, and a damn good calorie count as low as 100.

The increasingly popular Pocotein puts all of that into a supremely sweet and creamy ice cream, and to be honest, 10g of protein to 100 calories is a balance similar to some of the better protein bars out there, scaling to 20g of protein and 200 calories. Pocotein doesn’t have a huge selection of flavors at the moment, but plenty to give you some variety in traditional Cocoa and Vanilla, and more local, Matcha and Black Sesame Kinako.

For more information on Pocotein, drop by its website, which has a complete rundown of the protein ice cream, and those in Japan can purchase from there, too. The brand has many different sized bundles available, including variety packs so you can try all of the flavors, and the price can get as low as ¥208 (1.41 USD) per cup.
