The market for protein ingredients and sources has broadened significantly beyond traditional whey and casein, with increasingly specialized ingredients finding their way into sports nutrition, functional foods, and beverages. Companies are putting more emphasis on proteins with targeted health benefits, and one of the latest innovations to reach commercial scale is a form of lactoferrin that has, until now, been largely unavailable for formulators looking to differentiate their products.
Australian biotechnology company All G has officially launched its innovation LFX here in the U.S., described as the first commercially available apo-lactoferrin. Produced through precision fermentation, the ingredient is manufactured with less than 5% iron saturation, preserving its iron-binding capacity and delivering the highly bioactive, low-iron form of lactoferrin. It has also received an FDA “no questions” letter and is immediately available for use in supplements, functional foods, and drinks.
The significance of LFX lies in the way iron saturation affects lactoferrin’s biological activity. All G says the apo form more closely mirrors the naturally low-iron lactoferrin found in human breast milk and has greater potential to support immune health, gut health, iron regulation, and healthy aging. The company is already producing LFX at multi-metric-ton scale, positioning it as a reliable ingredient for manufacturers and innovative health and nutrition companies looking to differentiate.
