Optimum Protein Almonds Review: Realistic and rich chocolate flavor

Last year Optimum Nutrition really surprised us by launching another protein snack that isn’t your traditional protein bar or cookie. The new addition to the veteran supplement company’s lineup was Protein Almonds, which we’ve just got in for review. The product is indeed quite interesting with the combination of almonds and a protein-rich chocolate coating.

A full bag of Optimum’s Protein Almonds provides 10g of protein, 15g of carbohydrates with a gram of that sugar and 2g fiber, 16g of fat (half saturated), and 230 calories. As you can see the snack isn’t as lean as your typical protein bar, however, unlike a lot of other products that don’t have a good protein to calorie ratio, this one is worth it.

Review

The main reason we decided to grab the Optimum Protein Almonds for review is that we like trying new and creative protein snacks. This one fits that description, and it delivers with a flavor experience that’ll make you want to throw back a second bag as soon as you’re done with the first.

The best thing about Optimum’s Protein Almonds — at least with the Dark Chocolate Truffle flavor we got for review — is that chocolate dominates its overall taste. Right from the first bite, you get hit with an incredibly rich, realistic chocolate flavor that sits in your mouth from start to finish. The only time the almonds play a part is when you bite right down, and you get that crunchy, nutty consistency.

While you will find some almond pieces hanging around after you’ve chewed and swallowed the snack, once it’s down the experience is still dominated by chocolate with a mouthwatering aftertaste. The Protein Almonds essentially leave you wanting another handful, and with only a few per bag that’s why we said it’ll make you want a second bag right after the first.

Summary

We truly have to congratulate Optimum Nutrition on its Protein Almonds, as the veteran supplement company has definitely done a great job on this one. Because of the product’s nutrition profile, it’s not something we’d keep on hand as a quick, convenient snack, but with only a gram of sugar, it is the perfect healthy protein treat.

As mentioned above, we did only get the Dark Chocolate Truffle flavor in for our review. We imagine the consistency won’t be too different with the Protein Almonds’ other two flavors which are Chocolate Jalapeno and Cinnamon Roll. However, seeing as they’re quite unique options we suspect their overall flavors won’t be as dominated by chocolate.
