New female-focused research expands the science behind AstaReal Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid most commonly sourced from algae, and it has become an increasingly interesting ingredient in sports nutrition thanks to its antioxidant and cellular energy support. AstaReal is one of the most established names in that space, backed by an extensive body of human research. Its latest study takes the ingredient in a particularly relevant direction, examining whether it can improve how active women produce and use energy during exercise.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study involved 20 recreationally active women taking 12mg of AstaReal Astaxanthin daily for two weeks. Researchers then measured respiratory exchange ratio during cycling to assess the balance between fat and carbohydrate used for energy. Compared with placebo, there was a statistically significant shift toward greater fat oxidation at moderate intensities, where that fuel source naturally contributes mostly to sustained exercise.

Importantly, the increase in fat utilization did not come with higher heart rate, blood lactate, or perceived exertion, suggesting greater metabolic efficiency without making the exercise feel harder. That gives AstaReal Astaxanthin an interesting position as a potential performance multiplier, supporting steadier energy and endurance adaptation rather than simple stimulation. The findings could lead to the ingredient finding its way into more categories than what we’re used to seeing it in.
